RC Planes and Helicopters
Fun and available in really easy to fly, or more complicated versions, remote controlled (RC) planes and helicopters are among the most popular toys available today. High quality and inexpensive, the smaller helicopters and planes offer hours of fun for kids and adults who want to fly in their garage, living room or back garden (even the office is possible!) These great gadgets are usually quiet so there's little chance of objection from neighbours; added to this, they are one of the hottest toy or holiday gifts around at the moment, small enough to fit into your hand but robust and manoeuverable.
How Do Planes and Helicopters Fly?
Aside from the remote technology, the science behind these great little gadgets is to do with simple aerodynamics. There are four forces that impact on flight - gravity, drag, lift and thrust.
- Gravity - pulls the model downwards
- Drag - the friction created by the model as it moves forward against the air
- Lift - this keeps the model in the air and is created by the airflow over the curved upper and lower wing surfaces.
- Thrust - this is the push/pull action that moves a model in a forwards direction
With 2 or 3 channels, simple RC planes and helicopters are especially geared toward the child or occasional flyer with all the fun of the more expensive RC planes or helicopters without the complications. These quality, ready to fly toys are a real buzz when you gain mastery over their flight, which is quickly accomplished.
